Why Self-Realization Is So Difficult: 3 of the Greatest Hindrances & the One Essential Cause

✨ Welcome to today’s exploration.

In this video, we’re diving into three of the greatest hindrances to Self-Realization — and uncovering what may be the one essential cause for awakening to liberation and true happiness.

To guide our journey, we turn to the writings of Maud A. Piggot, the first British woman known to have visited and spent time with Sri Ramana Maharshi in the 1930s. Through her reflections, we glimpse not only the words Maharshi offered, but a description of the living teaching she received in his presence — through his silence, his compassion, his humor, his glance, and his being.

Together, we’ll reflect on how these timeless insights may speak directly to us today, illuminating the inner obstacles that keep us from realizing our true nature, and supporting us in focusing on the essential ingredient for  liberation.

The Hierarchy Of Needs Can Be Found Within

For seekers, the qualities in Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs can be sought in the world, in Maya, and within, in the Heart, through self inquiry. For most of us, it’s usually a combination of the two. Tom supports us in both. But perhaps, what we are truly seeking in the pyramid can only be solidly actualized where it truly exists.

Going For Gold

If you are genuinely interested in liberation, chances are you are going for gold. Bronze and silver are not enough for you. After listening to this video, what do you think? Are you going for gold?

Please comment and or ask questions if inspired by these conversations and Tom’s responses.

The book sited in this video is The Direct Means To Eternal Bliss or The Most Direct Means To Eternal Bliss (the same book, different titles) by Michael Langford.

Unbothered, Untouched, Unscathed, and Unharmed

This is an edited Satsang conversation between a participant and Tom about ‘surrender’. ‘When I surrender I am happy and my life seems to go well. When I am not surrendered I am bothered and life does not go smoothly’.

Tom gives a helpful, descriptive response (using the cinema screen as a metaphor for the Self ) that he refers to as a “Drishti-Srishti Vada Teaching”, or “a teaching with objects present.

For more on Drishti Srishti Vada and the other levels of teaching, here is the article Tom refers to in this video about the 3 stages of reality

Also highly recommended are Tom’s video on Savikalpa & Nirvikalpa teachings and on Partial nonduality.

What Do You Like About Bhagavan Ramana’s Teachings? What Do You Like About the way Tom shares them?

During this Satsang, Tom turned the tables on his Satsang participants, so to speak, and asked us the questions in the title above. The responses were rich and various.

How would you answer these questions? We would love to hear your response in the comments below.

-What do you like about Bhagavan Ramana’s teachings?
-What do you like about the way Tom shares them?
-How is it to hear other peoples responses? Do you resonate with some of them? Do you have a different response.

If moved, please let us know.
