(Maybe the only teaching you need?) The Basics of Self-Inquiry and Liberation

Tom’s new book ‘O Sri Ramana, The Heart: A Comprehensive Guide to Spiritual Liberation through Advaita, Devotion and the Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi‘ is now available here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HK6QLNLJ/

In this Satsang, Tom Das returns to the essential teaching of Advaita Vedanta and Ramana Maharshi: the purpose of spiritual life is liberation—the complete cessation of suffering and the discovery of lasting peace, happiness, and fulfilment.

What is liberation, and how can it be attained? Tom explains that liberation is not something you need to acquire in the future. It is your own true nature. The apparent problem is ignorance: we do not yet know ourselves as we truly are. Rather than becoming lost in intellectual questions about how ignorance began, this satsang points directly to the practical question: How can ignorance be removed now?

Through Self-inquiry, or the question “Who am I?”, attention is turned away from changing objects—the body, mind, thoughts, emotions, perceptions, and world—and toward the unchanging subject: the awareness that knows all experience. Tom reads and explores key passages from Who Am I? by Sri Ramana Maharshi, including the teaching that when the mind turns outward, names and forms appear, but when it rests in the Heart, the ever-present Self shines.

This is a clear introduction to the path of Jnana Yoga, non-duality, meditation, surrender, bhakti, and the art of abiding as the Self. Tom also explains why understanding the theory is only the beginning: as with learning tennis, genuine realization requires sincere practice, openness, and a willingness to repeatedly return inward.

The Self is described as Sat-Chit-Ananda: pure being, pure awareness, and uncaused peace or bliss. It is whole, complete, without separation, name, form, limitation, or individuality—Pūrṇa. You are not becoming this; you are recognizing what you have always been.

Relax, do not take the ego too seriously, and gently return to the stillness of your own being.
